Birdie Tourney
Mary Beth Knox was a vibrant twenty- one year
old college student at Michigan State University,
studying Supply Chain Management. She was a member of
Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Mary was an outstanding
student and had received six internship offers across
the country.
Mary Beth had been sick for about one week when
she finally visited and was admitted to Sparrow Hospital
in Lansing. It was there that she was diagnosed
with Ewings Sarcoma. She was transferred to the
University of Michigan Medical Center to undergo
treatment. After her first regimen of chemotherapy,
Mary lost all of her hair, and resembled a new born
bird, thus receiving the name “Birdie”.
Mary was an inspiration to everyone she met.
She fought her disease with courage, determination, and
humor. She always had a smile on her face.
Birdie lost her battle with Sarcoma on March 27, 2007 at
the age of twenty two.
Birdie’s wish was to host a “Birdie Tourney” to
raise funds for Sarcoma Research and ultimately a cure,
so that no other family would have to endure the loss of
a loved one to Sarcoma.
